Many animations begin as drawings or sketches and then are set to motion through the tools of animation software. For this project, you will be responsible for creating an animation to represent a specific part of the play, Oedipus the King. Once you have animated your assigned scene, we will put them all together to create one long animation that depicts the life of Oedipus from birth till his banishment from Thebes. Each individual project should have a maximum of five scenes and a minimum of three.
The size for this project is 1280 width x 720 height in pixels. Trace over/draw any objects or backgrounds you need for your project. Draw/trace all scenes and characters in Photoshop and bring into the Library in Animate. As you work, save your project as a .fla and name it lastname + first initial + oedipus (scene number).fla. When you are finished, export it as a .SWF file with the same name (ex: pettywoedipus(scenenumber).SWF). Submit the .SWF file using the form below.
Scenes to create: 1. Oedipus was born in Thebes to King Laius and Queen Jocasta. 2. An oracle told King Laius that his son was destined to kill him. 3. Laius decided to have his son destroyed. 4. The servant who was supposed to destroy baby Oedipus gave him to a shepherd from Corinth. 5. The shepherd gave the baby Oedipus to the King Polybus and Queen Merope of Corinth to raise as their son. 6. Life is good for Oedipus, Prince of Corinth. 7. When Oedipus is older, he is told that he is adopted. 8. Oedipus consults an oracle and is told that he is destined to marry his mother and kill his father. 9. Oedipus decides to try to avoid his fate by leaving Corinth. 10. Oedipus kills a group of men at a place called Phocis. 11. Oedipus arrives in Thebes where a Sphinx is holding the city hostage. 12. Oedipus solves the riddle of the Sphinx and is crowned king and made the husband of Queen Jocasta. 13. Oedipus and Jocasta have 4 children together. Thebes is thriving under King Oedipus’ rule. 14. Years later, a plague is killing people and the only remedy is to find Laius’ murderer. 15. Creon tells Oedipus that the gods want Laius’ murderer avenged. 16. Oedipus promises to find the killer and banish him from Thebes forever. 17. Tiresias accuses Oedipus of being the murderer. 18. Oedipus accuses Tiresias and Creon of trying to usurp his throne. 19. The truth is revealed: Oedipus is the murderer of Laius and the son and husband of Jocasta. 20. Jocasta hangs herself. 21. Oedipus gouges out his eyes. 22. Oedipus is banished from Thebes. 23. Creon becomes the new king.
